Loctite® Adhesive Connection System Simplifies and Strengthens Light Gauge Steel Construction

Rocky Hill, Conn., October 27, 2005 -- Light gauge steel buildings are extremely strong and impervious to insects, moisture, and other environmental challenges. Joining the galvanized steel components, however, has traditionally required a significant investment of time, materials, and money.

To increase connection strengths and reduce assembly time and costs, Henkel Corporation has introduced the Loctite® Adhesive Connection System, a unique combination of structural adhesive and mechanical fasteners. This easy-to-use, patent-pending system replaces traditional assembly methods that rely on hundreds of collated screws for strength with a durable, high strength adhesive and dozens of pneumatic pins, screws, rivets or clinches. By eliminating the majority of screws, the system reduces assembly time by 85% and associated expenses by 60%.

The Loctite Adhesive Connection System can be used to fabricate residential and non-residential building components such as roof and floor trusses, shear walls, headers, jamb studs, and cantilever beams. This unique Adhesive Connection System is a two-step process.

First, Loctite® H8600 (TM) Speedbonder (TM) structural adhesive is applied to the galvanized steel components, flowing easily without running. Specially formulated to provide long-term bond strength and durability on galvanized surfaces, the patent-pending adhesive delivers high load carrying and enhanced cyclic loading properties. A two component, room temperature curing methacrylate adhesive, this non-sagging material fills gaps as large as 0.375 inches and requires little or no surface preparation. Offering rapid room temperature cure and excellent environmental resistance, the adhesive may be cleanly and accurately applied using hand held cartridge dispensers or large volume meter mix dispense equipment.

After the adhesive is dispensed onto parts, a small number of mechanical fasteners such as pneumatic pins, screws, rivets or clinches provide immediate structural integrity along with the clamping force required during the adhesive cure cycle.
